lang describe the "blossom-covered lane" of "Skylark" puts you in the lush green of a small town, and the other familiar songs - particularly Paula Cole's imaginative rendition of "Autumn Leaves" and Alison Krauss' "This Time the Dream's on Me" - savor the slow, considered, quintessentially Southern wordplay of Mercer's lyrics. It was a stroke of genius: Just hearing k.d. When it came time to film "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," John Berendt's account of the tawdry goings-on beneath the surface of stately Savannah, director Clint Eastwood centered his musical atmosphere on the work of that city's most famous son, lyricist Johnny Mercer. But there's no reason for Kottonmouth Kings to sound like the Beastie Boys covering US3's "Guadaloop," or for Master P to sound so stale. Sugar Ray can be forgiven for "Rivers" sounding like a buried Weezer treasure, since it's a tribute to that group's Rivers Cuomo. What's amusing is that so much of what's worth hearing here doesn't come from the heavyweight names but from the second-string players.Ī few of the big guns come through: The Dave Matthews Band tosses in some snaky riffing that puts "Help Myself" over the top, old spooky standbys Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds have murderous fun with "Red Right Hand" and the Eels' "Your Lucky Day in Hell" is a strong piece of seeping melancholy.īut selling points such as Everclear, Collective Soul, Foo Fighters (sounding mysteriously like Eric Matthews), Less Than Jake's obnoxious cover of the Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You" (which would have been better handled by Reel Big Fish) and D'Angelo's oddly heavy-handed treatment of Prince's "She's Always in My Hair" (which lacks the fresh arranging of the original) - well, none is worth more than a few crumpled bills, let alone $15.Īnd the imitative aspect of the disc is annoying. It's the soundtrack to a rushed-to-theaters sequel, so it's not surprising that much of "Scream 2" would sound like half-baked leftovers from other, better collections. "Scream 2: Music From the Motion Picture" Various artists (Capitol). Here he's got Johnny Cash's bawdy "Tennessee Stud," the Grass Roots' bubblegum "Midnight Confessions" and and the Vampire Sound Inc.'s grungy (and way too long) "The Lions and the Cucumber." There's even some current hip-hop, Foxy Brown's "Holy Matrimony (Letter to the Firm)." Randy Crawford's energetic "Street Life," Bobby Womack's dramatic "Across 110th Street," Bill Withers' moody "Who Is He (And What Is He to You)?," and two shimmering slices of classic slow jam - Bloodstone's "Natural High" (complete with its magnificent, Philly soul-style coda) and the Delfonics' exquisite "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)" - makes "Jackie Brown" a great jukebox.īut it wouldn't be a Tarantino effort if he didn't mix it up a little. starring '70s "blaxploitation" icon Pam Grier - is paired with primo '60s and '70s R&B. Tarantino's retelling of an Elmore Leonard tale of sex and crime on the streets of L.A. The "Jackie Brown" soundtrack, though less far-ranging than "Pulp Fiction's," seems to be equally on-point. Unlike so many soundtracks, which just seem to be repositories for stray songs by hit acts regardless of whether they fit the film's mood, Tarantino's use of music in "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" exploded with a brash, Technicolor, pop-culture intensity that mirrored the stories he was telling. Who can forget the ear amputation in "Reservoir Dogs" accompanied by the sparkling innocence of Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle with You"? It's as integral to his bullet-peppered stories as any of his low-life, high-octane characters.
